FTTH

When it comes to FTTH, we must talk about fiber access first. Fiber access means optical fiber is the transmission medium between local exchanger and end users, and it is divided into active type and passive type. According to how close it is to end users, it is commonly classified into FTTB, FTTC, FTTZ, FTTO, FTTF, FTTH, FTTSA and so on.

FTTH is the short form of fiber to the home, means optical fibers are connected to home directly. More specifically, it means an optical network unit (ONU) is installed in user's home or office, and it is only second to fiber to the desk (FTTD). This fiber optic communication technology not only offers larger bandwidth, but also enhances the transparency of data format, connection speed, wavelength and protocol.

SMF and MMF

Based on the number of propagation paths, optical fibers are classified into two types: single mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF).

SMF
A single mode fiber supports only one propagation path for light, and it has a small glass core which is usually 9 or 10 microns in diameter. It requires a light source with narrow spectral width and good stability, but it allows long-distance light transmission.

Single mode patch cord is in often in the color of yellow, while its connectors and jackets are blue.

MMF
A multimode fiber has a large diametral core (50 or 62.5 microns) that allows multiple modes of light to propagate, and its transmission range is relatively short, usually several kilometers.

Multimode patch cord is in orange or grey, and its connectors and jackets are either in beige or black.

Outdoor Fiber Optic Cable

As the name implies, the outdoor fiber optic cable is designed to realize optical signal transmission for outdoor applications. Its cable core, which is formed by combining several optical fibers in a certain way, is wrapped by an outer jacket, and sometimes it is also armored.

These optical cables have a robust structure, and they possess superior mechanical property and environmental suitability, making them resistant to corrosion, shock, tensile force and other factors. So, they could deliver stable performance for a long time despite of harsh weather conditions.

Indoor Fiber Optic Cable

Indoor fiber optic cables are mainly composed of tight buffered tube, aramid yarn and PVC outer jacket. The cable core is formed by arranging a certain amount of fibers in a predetermined way, then it is covered by outer jacket, and sometimes it is armored as well.

This product should have good flexibility and insulativity, whilst its flame retardancy and easy-to-handle property are also better when compared with outdoor optic cables.

FTTH Fiber Optic Cable

The FTTH fiber optic cable works as drop cable for FTTH applications, and it mainly consists of fiber unit, strength member and LSZH jacket. The strength member is either high-carbon steel wire or FRP, while the LSZH jacket exhibits superior flame retardant property.
